Staff Development

Safe recruitment of staff is vital when providing support to a vulnerable client group.

Our recruitment procedures follow CQC best practice, incorporating the latest ISA/DBS checks. We work very hard to maintain a low rate of staff turnover ensuring care and support is provided by an experienced knowledgeable team.

All our staff undergo an extensive induction period, mentored and supervised by experienced staff, and have access to individual supervision/appraisal sessions with their supervisors at least six times a year. We work hard to be an excellent employer, providing great benefits and support to all of our hard-working support team.

It is our policy to offer staff a career structure within the company, progressing from Support Worker through Senior Support Worker to Team Leader, Care coordinator and on to Management roles. Staff can also take on additional roles including key working and champions in specialist areas.

Training

During their individually tailored induction programme, all new staff are supported to complete the Care Certificate. In addition to a wide range of regular mandatory training, staff are encouraged to progress on to take their Diploma Level 2 & 3 in Health & Social care and for more experienced staff we provide access to a range of management training, including the Diploma Level 5 in Health & Social Care.

Further training in specialist areas such as dementia, PDA, Epilepsy etc. is also offered should staff wish to know more. We want the staff at Oakdown to excel and grow. In order to facilitate this, we have an on-site dedicated training room called The Hub with a Training Co-Ordinator called Mark. Mark came to Oakdown as a Team Leader and now with 13 years of previous teaching and training experience he is enjoying his role as Training Co-Ordinator. The Hub is a quiet, welcoming space where you can access information, gain support and use the facilities for learning needs.

Many of the Oakdown training courses are accessed through an online programme called Altura, you can access this from The Hub or from anywhere with internet making it easier to fit your training courses in around home life. Mark is happy to chat through and support any of your training needs. As resident needs change, the training is adapted so that all staff can support the residents to their fullest.
